Breakdown Controller

Jobs-November 3, 2025

Type: Permanent, Full-time
Hours: Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm
Location: Normanton, West Yorkshire

About the Role

We’re looking for a proactive and detail-focused Breakdown Controller to join our busy team at Welfare Hire — part of the Kelling Group.
You’ll play a key part in keeping our fleet of mobile welfare units, lighting towers, and eco-friendly site solutions up and running. When something goes wrong, you’ll be the calm voice coordinating quick, effective action to get our equipment back out supporting customers nationwide.

Reporting to the Senior Breakdown Controller, you’ll work closely with our Operations, Service, and Fleet teams — as well as customers, suppliers, and external engineers — to make sure breakdowns are handled efficiently and downtime is kept to an absolute minimum.

A Bit About Us

At Welfare Hire, we’re proud to be a market leader in sustainable welfare and lighting solutions for the infrastructure, utilities, construction, and maintenance sectors.

As part of the Kelling Group, we’ve seen rapid growth in recent years, with a modern, eco-efficient fleet and a strong commitment to innovation, safety, and service excellence. We’re a company that values long-term careers — we invest in our people through hands-on training, leadership development, and real opportunities to progress.

Our head office is based in Normanton, but our reach extends across the UK — providing high-quality, low-emission welfare units and lighting solutions to keep our clients’ projects running smoothly.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Taking incoming breakdown calls and coordinating swift solutions with suppliers and engineers.
  • Keeping customers updated on repair progress — from first call to resolution.
  • Ensuring downtime is kept to a minimum and escalating when necessary.
  • Raising purchase orders and recharges, liaising with finance on any billing queries.
  • Working closely with the workshop, operations, and sales teams to keep communication clear and consistent.
  • Maintaining accurate records and logging all activity in Syrinx.
  • Providing a professional, courteous service to every customer and partner you interact with.
  • Participating in the out-of-hours (OOH) rota — with additional pay for any hours worked.
  • Supporting with any other ad-hoc duties across the department.

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organisation.
  • Confident using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Previous experience in customer service — ideally in a fast-paced or technical environment.
  • Vehicle or plant knowledge is a bonus, but not essential — we’ll train you up.
  • A natural problem-solver who can stay calm under pressure.
  • A team player who’s just as comfortable working independently.

Perks & Benefits

We know that great teams deserve great rewards. Here’s what you can expect:

  • 25 days’ holiday (plus bank holidays) and additional leave schemes
  • Company pension and life insurance
  • Health & wellbeing programme
  • Cycle to Work scheme
  • Employee and store discounts
  • Free on-site parking
  • Referral programme
  • Sick pay and bereavement leave
  • Real career progression opportunities within a growing business

If you thrive in a fast-paced environment, enjoy problem-solving, and want to be part of a company that’s leading the way in sustainable site solutions — we’d love to hear from you.
